What Are Anal Fissures?

An anal fissure is a small tear or crack in the lining of the anus, the opening through which stool exits the body. This condition can cause significant pain during bowel movements. The condition is sometimes mistaken for other anorectal disorders like haemorrhoids due to overlapping symptoms.

What Causes Anal Fissures?

Anal fissures typically result from trauma to the anal canal. Common causes include:

  • Straining During Bowel Movements Chronic constipation or passing large, hard stools can stretch and tear the delicate lining of the anus.
  • Diarrhoea: Frequent loose stools can irritate and inflame the anal area, increasing the risk of fissures.
  • Childbirth: Vaginal delivery can exert significant pressure on the anal canal, leading to fissures.
  • Underlying Medical Conditions Diseases like Crohn's disease, which causes inflammation in the digestive tract, can make the anal lining more prone to tearing.
  • Poor Blood Flow: A lack of proper blood supply to the anus, often associated with ageing, can impair the healing of minor tears, turning them into chronic fissures.

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of anal fissures can vary depending on their severity and whether they are acute or chronic. Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp Pain During Bowel Movements: Pain is the main symptom, often described as a cutting or burning sensation. It may persist for hours after a bowel movemen
  • Bright Red Blood in Stool or on Toilet Paper: The fissure may cause minor bleeding, which appears as streaks of blood.
  • Visible Tear or Cracks: A small tear can sometimes be seen near the anal opening.
  • Itching or Irritation Chronic fissures may cause persistent discomfort and itching in the anal area.
  • Spasms in the Anal Sphincter: Some individuals experience involuntary tightening of the anal muscles, which exacerbates the pain.

If symptoms persist for more than six weeks, the fissure may be classified as chronic and require specialized treatment.
